Here be druids?
Between about 1740 and 1860 it was widely believed by antiquaries that ‘the druids’ had built the stone circles and other ancient structures of which there are so many in the South-West, and even natural rock formations such as the Cheesewring and Bowerman's Nose. The idea persisted in the popular imagination long after that. We now now the stone monuments were built well before the druids were around.
This book seeks to explain why that mistake occurred, as well as telling what little we do know about the ancient druids, and some aspects of modern druidry - including the surprising fact that Winston Churchill was a druid.
