John Tregembo was born in Padstow and has always painted and drawn. 'My family have been here for ever and have wrested their living from the sea for generations. I have lived by the sea most of my life and as a child grew up with long summer days wasted on the glorious sands of my home town. I work in whatever media I feel is appropriate to the scene I am trying to capture, and often switch freely between different paints and indeed use pretty much any utensil that I feel is right for the job. I am constantly fascinated by the colours and light of my Cornwall and hope I am portraying the wildness and menace of the North Atlantic, tempered with romantic ideals of sunny summer days.' Whilst John is mostly self taught, he does have a BA in fine art from the London Metropolitan University.
