Suzie Marsh established her workshop in 1987. Her animal sculptures capture the life and spirit of the subject and reveal fine details. She has undertaken many commissions and is a recognised leader in her field with her work in many galleries in the UK.
Suzie’s first public sculpture, unveiled by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston at Looe, Cornwall, is of Nelson, the one-eyed seal who resided for twenty years in the harbour and became a firm favourite with Looe residents. A public subscription raised funds to erect the full-sized statue, mounted on Pennyland Rocks by the harbour entrance.
Suzie’s initial sculptures are always undertaken in clay, which she finds a fluid medium for expression. This can be fired and finished in her own workshop or translated into another medium depending upon its eventual purpose. Most of her present work is finished in bronze resin, a material sensitive enough to reproduce every finger mark from the original work. Although this is a modern material it is finished using the same painstaking hand methods as her other work. Increasingly, Suzie is now producing work in hot foundry bronze and smaller pieces in pewter.
In appreciation of the major role which animals have played in her success, Suzie is an enthusiastic supporter of many animal charities. Cats Protection holds a special place in her affections and she also has strong links with the Turgwe Hippo Sanctuary in Zimbabwe. The latest addition to her charitable work is Animals Asia who rescue Moon Bears from the cages in China and Vietnam where they are milked for their bile. Suzie sculpted a Moon Bear to sit upon Animals Asia’s elephant in the London Elephant Parade 2010.
Following a trip in 2011 to the Chengdu rescue sanctuary in China, she has held a joint exhibition with Richard Symonds in 2012 called Moonstruck to help raise funds for Animals Asia.
